Gem Wallet makes the protection of your secret phrase and private keys even stronger. Now the wallet preview in the app switcher no longer shows your phrase or keys, and sensitive key data is wiped from your device’s memory right after use. Both protections have been live for our users since September 25, 2026, in versions 2.114.48 and 2.114.49 - there is nothing to turn on.
Gem Wallet Hides Your Secret Phrase From the App Switcher
The app switcher is the phone screen that shows snapshots of all your open apps. Gem Wallet now hides the secret phrase and private key screens there as soon as you leave the wallet.
Your secret phrase gives access to all your assets, so only you get to see it: a quick glance over your shoulder shows nothing, and if you take a screenshot, Gem Wallet warns you right away.
Gem Wallet Wipes Private Keys From Memory After Use
Memory zeroization (overwriting secret data with zeros) means erasing keys from your device’s memory right after they are used. Gem Wallet derives keys for each blockchain from your secret phrase (BIP32 derivation) and wipes their secret part immediately.
Keys to your BTC, ETH, SOL, and assets on 100+ other networks stay in memory no longer than needed. Security and privacy are the foundation of Gem Wallet, and this protection is on for every user automatically.
Benefits for Gem Wallet Users
Gem Wallet is a mobile self-custody wallet with 100% open-source code for iOS and Android. Here are its main benefits:
- Full Self-Custody: Your private keys stay on your device - only you sign transactions, and no intermediary ever touches your assets.
- Fully Open-Source Code: Gem Wallet’s code is 100% open and passed a CertiK audit in April 2026 - anyone can check how the wallet protects the secret phrase and keys.
- Privacy by Default: No sign-up needed - no email, phone number, or ID, and Gem Wallet collects no personal data.
- Phrase Out of Sight: Secret phrase and private key screens are hidden as soon as you leave the app - for example, when you switch to a messenger or email.
- Screenshot Warning: Take a screenshot of your secret phrase or a key, and Gem Wallet shows a warning right away.
- Keys Don’t Linger in Memory: Secret data is wiped right after keys and addresses are derived, including for Bitcoin.
- Protection Without Settings: Both protections are on automatically for every user - there is nothing to look for in settings.
- Simple and Clear Interface: The app is easy to figure out from the first seconds - every feature is at hand, and it works equally well for crypto beginners and experienced users.
Resources for Developers
Both protections are part of Gem Wallet’s approach to security, and their code is open - anyone can read it line by line:
Conclusion
Gem Wallet looks after our users’ security even where you can’t see it: your secret phrase stays out of previews, and keys don’t linger in memory. Open Gem Wallet and store your crypto securely and privately.
