Gem Wallet Swaps XLM, USDC, and Stellar Tokens Through Stellar DEX

Gem Wallet, together with our partner Stellar DEX, swaps XLM for USDC and other tokens on the Stellar network and back - every pair has XLM or Circle’s USDC on one side.

Swaps through Stellar DEX are decentralized by their very nature: the DEX is built into the Stellar blockchain, so every trade goes through right on the network.

Say you received a payment in USDC, and you want to hold part of it in XLM. Choose XLM in the receive field - before you sign, Gem Wallet shows how many coins will arrive and runs the swap through Stellar DEX right on the Stellar network.

What Is Stellar DEX?

Stellar DEX (SDEX) is the DEX built right into the protocol of the Stellar blockchain: swapping tokens here is one of the network’s basic operations, just like a regular transfer. Stellar DEX liquidity has two parts: order books, where buy and sell orders are filled at the best price and in queue order, and AMM pools, which arrived on Stellar with the Protocol 18 upgrade in November 2021. In an AMM pool, the reserves of two tokens set the rate, and the pool fee goes entirely to liquidity providers.

As of November 2026, the Stellar network, where Stellar DEX runs, counts 10.1M addresses, and an average transaction on it costs about $0.0007 (according to stellar.org). Circle issues USDC here: the stablecoin has run on Stellar natively since February 2, 2021, and has traded on Stellar DEX from day one (according to Stellar and Circle).

A trustline on Stellar is an account’s consent to hold a specific token: while it is open, 0.5 XLM on the balance stays in the network reserve.

How Gem Wallet Finds the Best Path on Stellar DEX

Gem Wallet gets the Stellar DEX quote from Horizon - the API of a Stellar node - and every request returns a rate based on the current state of the network, with no cache. Here is how a swap works:

  1. Path Search for the Exact Amount: Horizon goes through Stellar’s order books and AMM pools, directly and through other assets, and for each path returns how many tokens it delivers for exactly your amount.
  2. The Most Profitable Path: Gem Wallet keeps the path that delivers the most tokens - it can go through intermediate assets, and according to Stellar documentation there can be up to five.
  3. One Stellar Transaction: On your device, the wallet builds a transaction from opening a trustline, if you don’t have one yet, and a PathPaymentStrictSend operation (sending an exact amount along the chosen path). The network runs every step of the path in that one operation.

The table below shows how much USDC Stellar DEX gave in Gem Wallet for XLM at about $1,000 and $50,000: along the best path and through the single XLM/USDC pool, quotes as of October 25, 2026.

You PayBest Stellar DEX PathXLM/USDC Pool OnlyPath Gain
5,838 XLM1,002.39 USDC999.17 USDC+0.32%
291,900 XLM49,946.31 USDC48,940.70 USDC+2.05%

The larger the swap, the bigger the gain: a path across order books and pools at once picks up liquidity where a single pool already moves the price (Gem Wallet data).

How to Swap XLM for USDC via Stellar DEX in Gem Wallet

  1. Open XLM in Gem Wallet and tap Swap
  2. In the receive field, choose USDC on the Stellar network
  3. Enter the amount of XLM you want to swap
  4. Tap the swap details - when Stellar DEX has the best rate, it is shown in the provider row together with the amount of USDC you will receive

Important: The Stellar network fee for a swap is paid in the native token, so keep a small amount of XLM on your balance.

Benefits of the Stellar DEX Integration for Gem Wallet Users

Gem Wallet is a mobile self-custody wallet with 100% open-source code for iOS and Android, where you can securely store, swap, and stake crypto, and buy it with a credit card right in the wallet. Here is what the Stellar DEX integration gives our users when swapping Stellar tokens:

  • Trustline Inside the Swap: The wallet puts the trustline opening into the same transaction as the swap, so the new Stellar token arrives at once, with no separate signature.
  • Minimum Amount to Receive: The Stellar network completes the swap only if at least the minimum Gem Wallet showed before you signed arrives at your address.
  • A 15-Minute Quote: If the network does not include the swap transaction in that time, it expires instead of going through at an outdated rate.
  • Balance for the Trustline Reserve: When you swap all your XLM, the app keeps 0.55 XLM on your balance - for the new trustline reserve and a buffer for the network fee.
  • Built-In DEX Aggregator: On every swap, Gem Wallet compares provider rates and offers the best one.
  • Buy XLM With a Credit Card: If you don’t have XLM on your balance yet, buy XLM with a credit card right in the wallet and swap it for the Stellar token you need right away.
  • Simple and Clear Interface: Every Gem Wallet feature is native and intuitive, so a swap through Stellar DEX is just as easy for a beginner as for an experienced crypto enthusiast.
