Tempo has no gas token, so there is nothing to buy before your first transfer - it is enough to hold USDC or USDT in your balance.
Gem Wallet pays the fee with a stablecoin and automatically picks the asset from the supported list that has enough balance. At the moment, the fee can be paid with pathUSD, USDT0, or USDC.e - the last two are USDT and USDC on the Tempo network.
You can also choose manually which asset to pay with. The list of assets will expand as new stablecoins appear on the Tempo blockchain.
What Is the Tempo Blockchain?
Tempo is a Layer 1 blockchain for stablecoin payments. It was incubated by Stripe and Paradigm, and its mainnet launched on March 18, 2026. A block finalizes in ~0.6 seconds and is not rewritten afterwards. The network is EVM-compatible (Ethereum Virtual Machine), so a regular Ethereum-format address works here without any changes.
Tokens on Tempo are issued under the TIP20 standard. It is built on ERC20 and adds two things: memos for payment reconciliation and fee payment with the token itself.
