What Is Dash (DASH)?
Dash is a Layer 1 blockchain built as digital cash - the name is short for “digital cash”. Programmer Evan Duffield launched it on January 18, 2014 to fix two weaknesses of Bitcoin: slow transfers and a fully public payment history. The network started as Xcoin, became Darkcoin almost at once, and took the name Dash in March 2015.
Dash grew out of the Bitcoin code but added masternodes to the miners. Masternodes lock transfers in seconds, sign blocks against 51% attacks, and vote on how the network treasury is spent. What Is a Dash Wallet?
A Dash wallet is an app that holds the private keys to your DASH and gives you a Dash address to receive coins. The coins themselves stay on the Dash blockchain; the wallet signs transfers with your key. There are two kinds:
- Self-custodial Dash wallet: the keys are created and stored on your device, and only you can move your DASH.
- Custodial Dash wallet: an exchange or company holds the keys and can freeze or limit your coins.
For a coin built around private payments, the wallet matters as much as the network. A custodial service links your DASH to your name, email, and ID before you make a single transfer.

Privacy on Dash: Wallet Level and Network Level
Privacy with DASH works on two separate levels, and it helps to know which one protects what:

On the network level, a regular Dash transfer is public: the sender address, the recipient address, and the amount are recorded on the blockchain, as on Bitcoin. CoinJoin, called PrivateSend until the Dash Core 0.17 release in April 2021, is an optional privacy feature of the Dash protocol. It is turned on manually in a wallet that supports it.
Gem Wallet covers the wallet level: nothing ties your DASH to who you are. CoinJoin is not available in Gem Wallet at the moment, so every transfer you send from it is a regular Dash transaction. Other privacy-focused coins take a different route - Zcash protects transaction details with zero-knowledge proofs.
How Dash Transfers and Fees Work
A Dash transfer is confirmed in two steps. First, InstantSend - a lock set by masternodes - fixes the transfer in about 2 seconds, and after that the same coins cannot be spent again. Then, about 2.5 minutes later, a miner adds the transfer to a block, and masternodes sign that block with a ChainLock, so even a miner with more computing power cannot reverse it. InstantSend applies to every transfer automatically, at no extra cost.
A regular transfer costs about 0.0000023 DASH, which is about $0.00014 as of September 2026. The fee depends on the size of the transaction in bytes, not on the amount, so a $5 transfer and a $5,000 transfer cost the same. The network is designed for about 56 transactions per second and runs far below that load, so fees do not spike.
Gem Wallet sends DASH as a standard Dash transaction and shows the fee before you confirm, with a choice of Normal, Fast, or Custom. Dash uses the UTXO model, so the final fee also depends on how many inputs and outputs the transaction has. Dash applies InstantSend automatically, but Gem Wallet currently shows a transfer as pending until it is included in a block, even if the InstantSend lock is already in place.
Dash Address Format
A Dash address is a 34-character string that always starts with an uppercase X (for example, Xp8Hd........3kTq). This is the format documented by the Dash documentation. One address is enough to receive DASH from exchanges, other wallets, and friends.
A Dash address is not interchangeable with addresses of other networks. Bitcoin addresses start with 1, 3, or bc1, and EVM addresses start with 0x. Before you send, check that the address starts with X and that the withdrawal network on the exchange is set to Dash: coins sent to an address of another network are lost.
