What Is Dash (DASH)?
Dash is a cryptocurrency built as digital cash for everyday payments: a transfer is locked in about 2 seconds and costs a fraction of a cent. DASH is the native coin of the Dash network, with a market cap of $776 million (CoinGecko, September 2026). How the network works is covered in the Dash blockchain guide, and how to store the coin in the Dash wallet overview.
How Buying DASH in Gem Wallet Works
Gem Wallet lets you buy DASH without an exchange: you pay an on-ramp provider, and the provider sends DASH on the Dash network directly to your own address in the wallet. The coins never sit on a third-party account, so they are under your control from the first minute.
Gem Wallet works with more than ten fiat on-ramp partners and shows the offers available in your country, so you choose the provider and the payment method before you pay. Your Dash address is created with the wallet from your 12-word secret phrase - it is 34 characters long and starts with an uppercase X. That is the address the purchase is delivered to.
What It Costs to Buy DASH
The total price of a DASH purchase is made of three parts:
- Provider fee and rate: each on-ramp provider sets its own fee and exchange rate, which is why offers for the same amount differ.
- Payment method: cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and bank transfers can be priced differently by the same provider.
- Network fee: the provider pays the Dash network fee to deliver the coins; a regular Dash transfer costs about $0.00014 (September 2026), so this part is close to zero.
Gem Wallet shows the full amount in your currency and the DASH you will receive before you confirm, so there are no surprises after the payment.
Buy DASH or Swap Into It
There are two ways to get DASH into the wallet, and the right one depends on what you already have:
| Route | You pay with | What you pay for |
|---|---|---|
| Buy | Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, bank transfer | Provider fee and rate |
| Swap | BTC, ETH, USDT, or other crypto | Swap route and network fees |
If you hold fiat, buying is the direct route. If you already hold crypto, swap it for DASH through the built-in DEX aggregator in Gem Wallet: no card and no provider checkout.
After the Purchase: How DASH Shows Up
On the Dash network, InstantSend locks the incoming transfer in about 2 seconds, and a miner adds it to a block about 2.5 minutes later. Gem Wallet currently shows the transfer as pending until it is included in a block, even if the InstantSend lock is already in place - so a pending status for a couple of minutes is normal.
If you later send DASH elsewhere, check that the recipient address starts with X and that the network is Dash: coins sent to an address of another network are lost. When you want to cash out, you can sell DASH from the same wallet. Fee options and other Dash details are listed in the Gem Wallet documentation for Dash.
