What Is BNB Chain?
BNB Chain is an EVM-compatible blockchain with ~3-second block time and average transaction fees of $0.05-$0.30. Originally launched as Binance Smart Chain (BSC) in 2020 and renamed to BNB Chain in 2022, it runs on Proof of Staked Authority consensus and hosts thousands of decentralized applications, including PancakeSwap, Venus, and ListaDAO. Its low fees and Ethereum tooling compatibility make it one of the most active networks for DeFi, GameFi, and stablecoin transfers.
What Is BEP20?
BEP20 is the token standard on BNB Chain, derived from Ethereum's ERC-20 specification. It defines how tokens are issued, transferred, and burned, and works with the same EVM smart contract logic as Ethereum - which means developers can port ERC-20 contracts to BNB Chain with minimal changes. BEP20 addresses use the standard Ethereum format (0x… , 42 characters), so a BEP20 wallet address looks identical to an ERC20 one. The networks themselves are not interchangeable: sending BEP20 tokens to an exchange that only accepts ERC20 deposits will result in lost funds.
BEP20 should not be confused with BEP2 - the older standard from Binance Beacon Chain, which was sunset in 2024 and does not support smart contracts.
What Is a BEP20 Wallet?
A BEP20 wallet is a self-custodial app that stores the private keys controlling BEP20 tokens on BNB Chain. It generates a 0x… address, signs transactions, and connects to BNB Chain DApps. Because the standard is EVM-compatible, the same wallet address can receive any BEP20 token - stablecoins like USDT and USDC, DeFi tokens like CAKE, governance tokens, and meme coins - without creating a separate address per asset.
A proper BEP20 wallet handles three things at minimum: it lets you hold BNB to pay gas, displays your full token portfolio in one view, and connects to BNB Chain DApps for swaps, staking, and lending without exposing your private keys to the website.
BEP20 vs ERC20 vs TRC20: Quick Comparison
| Standard | Network | Address Format | Gas Token | Typical Fee | Block Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BEP20 | BNB Chain | 0x… | BNB | $0.05-$0.30 | ~3 sec |
| ERC20 | Ethereum | 0x… | ETH | $1-$20+ | ~12 sec |
| TRC20 | Tron | T… | TRX | $0.50-$2 | ~3 sec |
BEP20 and ERC20 share the same address format but operate on different networks - this is the single most common source of lost funds. Always confirm the receiving network before sending, even when the address looks correct. TRC20 uses a different address format (starting with T), so it's harder to confuse visually.
Most Popular BEP20 Tokens
The most-held BEP20 tokens in Gem Wallet include stablecoins, DEX tokens, and ecosystem assets:
- USDT (Tether) - largest stablecoin on BNB Chain by transfer volume
- USDC (USD Coin) - regulated stablecoin from Circle
- PancakeSwap (CAKE) - native token of the largest DEX on BNB Chain
- Bakery Token (BAKE)
- SafeMoon (SAFEMOON)
- Cream (CREAM)
- TOKO Crypto Coin (TOKO)
- WazirX (WRX)
BNB Is Required for Gas
Every BEP20 transaction - whether you're sending USDT, swapping tokens, or interacting with a DApp - is paid for in BNB, the native coin of BNB Chain. Without a BNB balance, your BEP20 tokens are technically yours but cannot move. This is the most common reason a BEP20 transfer fails: the wallet holds the token but no BNB to cover the fee.
For everyday use, keeping $2-$5 worth of BNB in your wallet covers dozens of transactions. You can fund your wallet by transferring BNB from any exchange or by using buy BNB directly inside Gem Wallet via 30+ payment methods.
